WNBA Ties Sweeps to New AOL Programming

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

AOL.com will begin delivering WNBA content through its online channels in a multi-year programming deal that extends a partnership that kicked off six years ago.

As part of the deal, earlier this month AOL.com began providing a broadband video on-demand channel featuring WNBA video highlights at AOL.com/WNBA. And next month, the site will host a Greatest Moments video series sweepstakes in celebration of the WNBA’s 10th anniversary season. The sweeps will let viewers vote for their favorite moments, including the best shots and best passes, and pick the overall greatest moment in league history.

The sweeps—which dangles a grand-prize trip to the 2006 WNBA Finals and other WNBA-themed prizes—will launch to coincide with the All-Star Game next month.

“The video programming we offer on AOL.com, along with the Greatest Moments promotion we create around it, will celebrate the league’s history and highlight the success of its players,” said Kevin Conroy, executive VP, AOL in a statement. “Our shared commitment to the goals of the league makes us ideal partners, and AOL.com is in a unique position to be able to extend the reach of the sport by presenting this content to the largest possible audience online in entirely new ways.”

The video on-demand channel features game highlights from the past 10 years, behind-the-scenes game coverage, feature stories on players and interviews with WNBA players. WNBA video will also be indexed in AOL’s video search product AOL.com/WNBAVideoSearch.

“AOL’s ability to connect with consumers is unsurpassed and by bringing the WNBA’s video archive to life, users will be able to experience the league’s history in a whole new way,” said Donna Orender, president, WNBA in a statement.

Programming content reaches across several of AOL.com’s programming areas, including its Black Voices and Women’s and Lifestyle online channels.

AOL.com also becomes the Official Online Media Partner of the WNBA, as well as the presenting partner of the WNBA Coach of the Year award. In addition, AOL will reach fans through players’ blogs, in-arena signage and advertising during every nationally televised WNBA regular and post-season game, as well as the league’s All-Star Game.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
