Musicland Web Site Rewards Bad Dates With Gift Cards

A bad date just might pay off through a new sweepstakes offered by Crankycupid.com, a Web site that rewards love-scorned consumers with free gift cards.

Cranky Cupid readies his
arrow to strike down-on
their luck in love consumers

Cranky, the self-entitled, often sarcastic cupid invites consumers who didn’t have a happy Valentine’s Day and other bad-date victims to submit their worst-date experiences online at Crankycupid.com as part of the Bad-Date Sweepstakes. Participants with the crème de la crème of worst-date experiences can enter to win gift cards redeemable at Sam Goody, Suncoast or Media Play stores.

One first-prize winner will receive a $200 gift card; 25 second-place winners will receive a $20 gift card. Judges will rate the entries on creativity, originality, humor and most pathetic date experience.

“Dating is a game of chance, you never know what you are going to get,” said Cranky in a statement. “Even cupids make mistakes. I created the ‘Bad-Date Sweepstakes’ as retribution for those who have experienced dating agony thanks to an uninhibited arrow.”

The sweepstakes runs through Feb. 28 and is open to consumers 13 and older. Winners will be selected by March 28.

Crankycupid.com gives visitors realistic advice and observations on love, humorous blog entries and break up lines. The site also helps those romantically challenged, offering top love songs and DVD recommendations to keep the romantic peace.

Cranky the Cupid became sour on love after his significant cupid fell for another and broke Cranky’s heart, according to the Web site.

Sam Goody and Suncoast, which are divisions of Musicland, are sponsoring the contest. Internet materials support.

In December 2004, Sam Goody launched a Bad-Gift Boycott, which gave away $8,000 in gift cards for its music stores in exchange for bad Christmas gifts (PROMO, Jan. 2005). The Minneapolis chapter of the American Cancer Society, which received the gifts from the Mall of America, plans to resell the gifts at its annual garage sale fundraiser. More than 500 people participated in that event.
