MTV Solicits Consumer Content for New Sites

(Promo) Maybe their new slogan can be “I want to program my own MTV.”

MTV Networks has more than two dozen new Web sites on its drawing board, many of which will rely on consumer contributed content.

The new sites, slated to launch over the next several months, represent an eclectic collection of music and comedy themes in sync with MTV’s on-air cable channels. The goal is to engage viewers as producers.

“We’re taking an open approach with our content on the Web, allowing our consumers to share, embed, influence and interact with everything they see on-air and online,” said Mika Salmi, president, Global Digital Media, MTVN, in a statement.

In its traditional music milieu, MTV will offer Dances From Tha Hood with host Tweety, providing instructions on the latest steps in hip-hop and other genres. Viewers will be able to submit clips of their own moves. The site, called “Take Action. Make Art,” will solicit self-created graphics from a special edition HP notebook out since March, with submissions accepted through Oct. 17 at MTV-tama.com.

On VH1EyeCandy.com, launched in a beta version last month, Web surfers can use tools to grab and remix content from 150,000 photos and 5,000 videos and news stories.

In a reality twist, Engaged and Underage Couples Court will play off the popular show, with couples submitting blog posts, photos and videos for review by a jury of their peers.

In the comedy realm, Jokes.com will present a video stand-up database with viewer contributions, along with ComedyCentral.com’s joke database and Comedy Central stand-up videos when it launches in the first quarter next year.

Fans of Nickelodeon’s iCarly.com will be able to submit videos to that site showcasing their unusual talents and homemade animations that could make it on-air.

The-NGames.com is being touted as the first site offering casual gaming for teen-aged girls in partnership with AddictingGames when it launches early next year.
