Blockbuster Gets in the Game with Expanded Rental Program

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Blockbuster has ramped up its online DVD rental program with a new incentive to lure new customers—free video games.

Under its new offering, Blockbuster Total Access customers can redeem monthly e-coupons (good for one free in-store rental) for movies or video games. Members receive one e-coupon each month as part of their subscription.

“We want to give our customers an added option,” Blockbuster spokesperson Tami Cannizzaro said. “There are a substantial number of people who like to play games. Here’s an opportunity for them to do that.”

The new incentive lets members rent up to 12 free games a year. Blockbuster is promoting the service, which launched Dec. 19, via e-mails to opt-in subscribers and online ads on its Web site Blockbuster.com.

Dallas-based Blockbuster updated its online rental service with Total Access last month, which lets members earn a free movie rental for returning DVDs in-store (PROMO P&I, Nov. 15, 2006).

The company has offered online rentals for more than two years to compete with rival Netflix.
