Baskin-Robbins Sweeps Lets Them Eat Cake

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Consumers can have their ice cream cake and eat it too, perhaps in Versailles or London. They just need to enter to win an all-expense-paid trip to France or England via a new sweepstakes sponsored by Baskin-Robbins and The History Channel.

The “Let Them Eat Cake” sweepstakes, which supports the recent launch of Baskin-Robbins ice cream cake treats and the upcoming world premiere of The History Channel’s The French Revolution, puts a new twist on Marie Antoinette’s infamous statement, “Let them eat cake.” Consumers can log onto History.com/frenchrevolution to enter the sweeps. The grand-prize winner will receive a trip for two to Paris, including a one-day revolutionary art excursion to Versailles or a trip for two to London to see Les Misérables on stage and private instruction for 45 private lessons on Berlitz French and educational materials.

Five first-prize winners will receive the Berlitz basic French self-study programs and a three-day, two-night trip for two to the French Quarters in New Orleans, LA. Second-prize winners will receive The History Channel’s French Revolution on DVD.

As part of the promotion, consumers can request a “verbal coupon” by visiting participating Baskin-Robbins stores and saying, “Let them eat cake” to a Baskin-Robbins crew member to receive a $2 coupon off a future cake purchase.

The promotion is open to consumers 21 and older and runs through Jan. 17. Winners will be chosen in a random drawing and will be announced on Feb. 7.

In addition, consumers can take an online history quiz or play online games, including “the cake revolute” to see how far they can hit a cake with a bat.

“We are excited to partner with The History Channel for this fun sweepstakes that provides a unique twist on history,” said Maria Feicht, director of Brand Excitement for Baskin-Robbins, in a statement. “The ‘Let Them Eat Cake’ Online Sweepstakes supports our recent launch of delicious ice cream cake treats, while rewarding consumers with a chance to indulge in history, art and travel.”

The History Channel will highlight the sweepstakes on the premiere of The French Revolution on Jan. 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The program gives viewers a detailed look inside the revolution that brought down the French monarchy and marked the beginning of modern politics, diplomacy and nationalism.

Internet materials, in-store signage, TV spots and coupons support the promotion.

Baskin-Robbins is the world’s largest chain of ice cream specialty shops. The Canton, MA-based company has more than 5,100 retail shops worldwide and is part of the Dunkin’ Brands, Inc.

The History Channel has more than 87 million Nielsen subscribers. In 2004, The History Channel earned five news and documentary Emmy Awards.
