Williams Sisters Go Active With McDonald’s

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

As part of its Go Active healthy lifestyle initiative, McDonald’s expanded its relationship this week with tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams just in time for the Olympic games.

Effective immediately, the sisters, who will appear in the Olympics, will serve as the QSR’s newest global brand ambassadors. The two will be involved in Olympic initiatives as well as support McD’s fitness and active lifestyle programs.

“Partnering with Venus and Serena Williams is about keeping our promise to McDonald’s customers–to work with the world’s leaders in sports, music, fashion and entertainment and encourage people around the globe to incorporate physical fitness into their daily lives,” said Dean Barrett, McDonald’s senior VP, in a statement.

Beginning yesterday, the sisters are featured on McDonald’s Olympic-themed packaging in the U.S.–on take-out bags and Chicken Selects boxes–marking the first time that Olympic athletes have been featured on the company’s new packaging design. The Williams sisters will also appear in both Olympic and Ronald McDonald-themed television commercials throughout the summer. On the fitness front, Venus and Serena are participating in McDonald’s global Go Active Web site and visitors to the site will be able to get a behind-the-scenes look at how the sisters prepare for a match.

Additionally, Venus will demonstrate her flair for fashion by working with McD’s to design an accessory exclusively for the company’s Olympic Champion Crew, McDonald’s select employees who will travel to Greece for the Summer Games in August.
