The Loved Boat

How do you demo a cruise ship in land-locked cities – when the ship isn’t even built yet? Invite would-be travelers to the movies. Royal Caribbean toured its “Virtual Voyager” mobile theater for four months before launching the Voyager of the Seas cruise ship in November. The tour vehicle housed a wide-screen 3-D theater with 30 seats and a scale model and full-size cut-away diagram of the ship. Viewers watched 3-D scenes of the Caribbean while tropical smells and an ocean breeze wafted over them. Royal Caribbean got far more on-site bookings than expected. GMR Marketing, New Berlin, WI, handled the tour; StrayLight Corp., Warren, NJ, built the theater.

StrayLight has done virtual theaters for Hennessy Cognac’s sampling tour (shots of French vineyards and distilleries) and Kraft Foods’ PGA Tour sponsorship (bird’s-eye view of a golf ball headed toward a hole-in-one).
