Seizing the Moment

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Cards featuring great athletes are okay collectibles, we guess. But how do you capture great sports moments on a card? Telestar Interactive Corp. does it with micro-thin voice chips that can carry up to 45 seconds of an announcer’s call of, say, Mark McGwire’s 70th homer. The Cincinnati-based company is now offering its ProTalk cards (about $10 retail) up for promotional programs with customized content. “Say you’re a New England-based fast food chain and you want to do a series of self-liquidators,” poses Telestar’s Russ Dunham. “One week you do Carlton Fisk’s World Series home run, then the Hail Flutie pass, then `Havlicek stole the ball!’ The cards aren’t cheap – $1 to $2 apiece – but Dunham says marketers doing mass in-pack promotions can amortize the cost by seeding only every 20 or 30 cartons with talking cards.
