Bud Light Readies Rock Paper Scissors Events

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Bud Light is set to launch its second series of matches to find the USA Rock Paper Scissors League champion.

Local matches kick off in 325 markets across the U.S. starting Jan. 15. Players 21 years and older are eligible to enter for their chance at a free trip to Las Vegas next spring to compete in the finals for the $50,000 top prize.

The events are promoted locally with on-premise signage, radio, hats and T-shirt giveaways via on-scene brand reps.

“It’s a fun, social and co-ed event, which makes it a great sponsorship for Bud Light,” said Rick Leininger, director, Bud Light. “It’s something that all consumers can relate to. At some point in their life they have Rock-Paper-Scissored for something.”

The finals, held May 12 to 13 (likely at Mandalay Bay), will be televised on a yet-to-be-named network.

The tournament proved popular last year with 10,000 competitors signing on, including 264 who competed in the finals. The 2006 championship games aired on A&E last June and ESPN ran a 10-minute story.

The event includes a second-place $5,000 cash prize, a Best of 500 throws contest between two finalists for the chance to win a new car, and a costume competition for Bud Light prizes. Costumes last year ranged from Vikings to Wizard of Oz characters to ketchup and mustard.
