A&P Offers Loyalty Members Green Totes for Paperless Coupon Use

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

In time for Earth Day, grocery retailer the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company is teaming up with online coupon provider Zavers to offer an eco-friendly re-useable shopping bag to anyone who redeems a paperless coupon linked to their loyalty cards at A&P, Food Emporium, Pathmark, Superfresh or Waldbaum’s grocery stores.

The green promotion, which launched April 15 and will continue through the rest of this month, takes advantage of the growing alliance between grocery brands and mobile or online coupon providers. A&P announced the linkage of Zavers to its in-store loyalty programs in mid-March.

Users holding a loyal shopper card from A&P’s brands can sign up for an account and register those cards. They can then download online coupons directly to the cards or sign up to have text messages linked to coupon offers sent to their mobile phones, where those too can be added to their cards. Users can also find and load the digital coupons at the Web sites of A&P brands, including www.apfreshonline.com, www.thefoodemporium.com, and www.pathmark.com.

When they then use those store loyalty cards to redeem a paperless coupon, shoppers will receive a free re-usable tote bag made of 100% post-consumer recycled content. The bags, which are also sold in A&P brand outlets, are intended to support the Elizabeth Haub Foundation, a non-governmental organization with a mission to safeguard the environment by promoting and strengthening national and international laws for environmental preservation. Proceeds from sales of the Haub bags go to support the foundation.

“We know that consumers want to do their part in helping the environment,” Anita Bajaj Newton, Zavers chief marketing officer, said in a release. “But often they simply don’t know what to do or how to help. Partnering with A&P, we’re offering shoppers a simple way to receive valuable offers online and on their mobile phones. It’s totally paperless, which is a benefit to the environment.”
In addition some A&P brands such as Pathmark are offering the free Haub bag as an Earth Day incentive to sign up for a loyalty card.
