Airlines Loyalty Programs’ Mark Silver Anniversary Via Sweeps

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Two major airline carriers are celebrating 25 years in the loyalty business with two separate sweepstakes that give away new Saturn roadsters and millions of frequent flyer miles.

To mark its 25th anniversary of the SkyMiles program, Delta Air Lines is sponsoring a sweepstakes with Avis Rent A Car to award 25 SkyMiles members each a 2007 Saturn Sky roadster. To enter, SkyMiles members will receive an entry into the sweepstakes for every 1,000 miles they earn through Dec. 31. Entry details are available at Delta.com/marketing/SkyMiles25.

“This is a way to say ‘thank you’ to Delta customers for their partnership and for their business supporting Delta over the years,” said Delta Air Lines spokesperson Gina Laughlin. “Winning a vehicle is a great incentive.”

Delta Air Lines launched its frequent traveler program in 1981. In its first year, SkyMiles membership grew from 98,000 to more than 38 million members today. Some 2.9 million free tickets have been redeemed under the award program.

Likewise, United Airlines is celebrating its 25th anniversary of its Mileage Plus program, dangling 25 grand prizes of 1 million miles—the airline’s largest-ever mileage giveaway.

To enter, Mileage Plus members must register online at United.com/25million. To earn one entry, Mileage Plus members must fly through June 16 per qualifying segment on United, United Express or Ted.

The approximate retail value of 1 million miles is $20,000 and can be used for 40 domestic Saver Award coach tickets or 10 first-class Saver Award trips to Paris. Members can also redeem miles for plasma screen TV or trips to the Caribbean.

Consumers who are not loyalty program members can join online at United.com/joinmp.
