Douglas Publications LLC has selected MeritDirect to take over management of its vast list portfolio, effective Jan. 1. The Douglas Publications postal and e-mail master files have 355,000 and 160,000 e-mail addresses, respectively. Altogether the appointment covers more than 35 lists, including magazine circulation files and numerous Briefings Publishing Group newsletter files. Douglas owns Briefings. Lake Group Media Inc. and Edith Roman Associates Inc. will handle these files through Dec. 31.

Lenser Exits List Management in Deal with Millard Group

Lenser & Associates has closed its list management division to focus on providing other direct marketing services, as part of a partnership arrangement with Millard Group Inc.

“We’ve entered an affiliate relationship and partnership with Millard to provide list management services to our clients,” said Michelle Houston, vice president of circulation and client services at Lenser.

Twelve list management accounts that had been managed by Lenser will now be handled by Millard Group. These include Edmund Scientific, Bluestone, Crazy Shirts, For Counsel and High Country Gardens. The other files are Imagine the Challenge, King Ranch, Lehman’s Hardware, Montessori Services, Orion Telescope, Rejuvenation and Select Seeds.

Lenser will focus on providing client services for circulation management and consulting for catalogers and other direct marketers and strategies for multi-channel marketing, according Houston.

She said that Lenser would continue providing list brokerage services. The San Rafael, CA-based firm was founded in 1994. It has 60 various kinds of clients.

Microsoft Gets Court to Bar UK Firm’s E-mail List Sales

Microsoft has stopped a British man from selling lists of e-mail addresses, which it alleges were used for spamming, according to reports.

A UK court has granted a summary judgment against Paul Martin McDonald, barring him from selling lists, according to the reports. However, it is unclear whether he was selling the lists or renting them out for onetime use.

Microsoft, which runs the free Web-based e-mail service Hotmail, reportedly sought the judgment to stop McDonald from running his Bizads business, through which he reportedly offered the e-mail lists.

Bizads reportedly sold or rented lists of e-mail addresses for about $115 per thousand names to companies advertising online pornography.

Microsoft claimed that though copy on the company’s out-of-service Web site at Bizads.co.uk said the addresses were permission based, some of the addresses were “seed addresses” set up to catch spam.

The injunction prevents McDonald from instigating the transmission of commercial e-mail to Hotmail accounts. If he disobeys, he could face fines and jail time.

Nexus Media Pulls Lists From Market
Nexus Media Communications Ltd. has pulled several files off the market formerly managed by Bethesda List Center Inc. These include Nexus Media’s Communications Worldwide database and several controlled circulation, direct mail and trade show lists.

One of our clients a leading catalog retailer based in the Northwest is seeking a Circulation Manager who will be an integral leader in their Brand Marketing team. The Circulation Manager will be a key player in the goal of maximizing revenue through development, planning and execution of catalog marketing strategies and budgets. Responsibilities will include planning of circulation retention, reactivation & acquisition strategies to drive file growth, and meet financial objectives. You will work closely with the Marketing Director and the Marketing Internet Manager to develop cross channel loyalty programs and contact strategies. Responsibilities also include but are not limited to management of list brokerage/list management activities, offline alternate acquisition programs, and catalog requestor program.

The successful candidate will have thorough knowledge of catalog circulation planning and production; thorough knowledge of list industry including brokerage and management; and possess well-developed written and interpersonal skills and strong negotiation skills. The individual must have knowledge of the financial dynamics of a mail order operation, including profit and loss reporting, forecasting, budgeting and sales planning. Must be skilled at motivating, challenging, supporting, and managing people. Must possess excellent project management skills and organizational skills, be detail oriented and able to coordinate multiple tasks. Must demonstrate the ability to work independently and effectively under pressure. Must be well versed in PC use and applications including Microsoft Excel, Word and Access.
