And the Caples Winners Are…

THE BIG WINNER at the 21st annual John Caples International Awards may be The Martin Agency, Richmond, VA. Martin not only picked up two first places for creative, but also the Irving Wunderman Award for Randy Belcher, its senior vice president and associate creative director. The agency took firsts in both consumer multimedia campaign and in consumer single-medium campaign for Geico Direct, in a tie with Tequila Worldwide, London, for Nissan Motor Ltd.

Tequila was one of two London shops that picked up two awards each. Tequila also won a first in consumer print, again for Nissan. Craik Jones Watson Mitchell Voelkel Ltd. took a first in consumer direct mail retention for Land Rover U.K. as well as a first in business direct mail for Land Rover, in a three-way tie with Grey Direct Marketing Group Inc., New York, for Lexmark Inc. and DraftWorldwide, New York, for Compaq Computer Corp.

Thanks to Wickersham Hunt Schwanter, Boston, the United States held its own, with two shops winning two creative awards each. Wickersham won firsts in both consumer TV, nonprofit and in consumer print, nonprofit for the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

However, the Best of Show (the Max Sackheim Award) went to the first-place winner in business single medium: Wunderman Cato Johnson, New York, for its U.S. Postal Service campaign. Goldsack Harris Thompson Advertising Ltd., Wellington, NZ, won a first in the consumer single-medium campaign category for the Crippled Children’s Society. The NZ CCS received the Courageous Client Award, established last year to honor clients willing to take a chance with campaigns on the edge.

Sid Liebenson, executive vice president at DraftWorldwide, Chicago, was honored with the Andi Emerson Award.

Other first-place winners included GG Creative, New York, for Mad magazine in consumer direct mail; CM Partners Inc., Rolling Meadows, IL, for SPS/Goodyear in business direct mail dimensional; Jacobs & Clevenger, Chicago, for ComEd in business direct mail retention; and Miller/Huber Relationship Marketing, San Francisco, for Levi Strauss & Co. in the consumer catalog category.
