Yahoo Mail: One-Third of Yahoo’s Traffic

Posted on

Yahoo! remains the second-most popular Web property in the U.S., according to January figures from comScore. According to recent figures released by Hitwise, the company has its e-mail product to thank for more than a third of its traffic.

According to Hitwise’s numbers, Yahoo! Mail accounted for 36.71 percent of Yahoo!’s overall traffic in February.

Yahoo! (yahoo.com) was second, accounting for 25.48 percent of the Web property’s traffic, followed by Yahoo! Search (search.yahoo.com), which accounted for 11.75 percent of its traffic.

My Yahoo! was fourth with 3.08 percent, followed by Yahoo! News with 2.61 percent, Yahoo! Address Book with 2.16 percent, Yahoo! Finance with 2.10 percent, Yahoo! games with 1.04 percent, Yahoo! Answers with 1.03 percent and Yahoo! Groups with 0.76 percent, according to Hitwise.

Hitwise also took a peek at the top Web-based e-mail providers in the U.S. and found that Yahoo! Mail topped both Microsoft’s Windows Live Mail and Google’s Gmail.

Yahoo! Mail claimed 56.46 percent of the online e-mail market in February, seeing a slight decline from January.

Windows Live Mail continued its descent and finished February with 19.14 percent of the e-mail market, while Gmail continued a steady rise (which coincides neatly with Live Mail’s decline) and finished the month with 10.82 percent.

Yahoo! Mail’s market share was up 3 percent year-over-year in February, while Live Mail was down 25 percent and Gmail was up 88 percent, according to Heather Hopkins at Hitwise.

Recent figures released by comScore reveal that in January reveal that Yahoo! Mail sat atop the mound with 92.6 million unique visitors, followed by AOL e-mail with 45.2 million visitors.

Windows Live Hotmail was third with 43.4 million visitors and Gmail finished fourth with 31.2 million visitors in January.

However, Gmail may have been overtaken by Zimbra, which boasts 31.4 million visitors.

It’s apparent that the e-mail landscape is not nearly as settled as the search landscape.
