Why Google’s HTTPS Encryption for Searches Will Kill Organic SEO

Posted on

Google searchHave you heard about HTTPS/SSL encryption for Google searches? Do you know why you should care about it? Don’t let the acronyms fool you into thinking that it’s irrelevant to you. If you rely on organic SEO in any way, you should be paying attention. Chris Horton, a content creator and digital strategist for SyneCore Technologies, offers an insightful overview and time line of Google’s steps toward HTTPS/SSL encryption on all searches for logged-in users.

Long story short, Google’s encryption of searches means that it’s now impossible for marketers and companies to track the results of organic search queries. In other words, now you can’t parse out a URL in your analytics tool to find the keywords used in the organic search query that led a visitor to your site.

This is a bad sign for SEO but a good one for social, local, mobile (SoLoMo) going forward. Google foresaw this shift coming and it’s making moves to prepare itself to reap the rewards.
