When to Tweet, Email, Facebook and Blog

A webinar presented by HubSpot reveals a wealth of information regarding when to update your Facebook status, post tweets, publish blog posts and send out emails. One common takeaway for all these activities: do it more often.

“The Science of Timing” was presented by Dan Zerrella, “social media scientist.” One of the webinar’s earlier slides showed that nearly half of the U.S. population resides in the Eastern time zone, while about 35 percent live in the Central time zone, 15 percent in the Pacific time zone and 5 percent in the Mountain time zone.

For Twitter, most retweets happen between 1 p.m. and 11 p.m. The webinar notes that retweets are mostly likely to happen late in the day and week.

In terms of click-through rates on Twitter by day, it was mostly steady except for slight dips on Mondays and Thursdays. By hour, CTR on Twitter saw peaks at 6 a.m., 10 a.m., 5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m.

HubSpot also highlighted the finding that average CTR was best when one or two links were tweeted per hour. If any more than three links were tweeted per hour, CTR was nearly zero percent. When it comes to Facebook, the webinar showed pages that averaged 0.5 posts per day received the most “likes.” The takeaway for Twitter and Facebook users is to not crowd your content.

The most Facebook shares occurred on Saturdays and Sundays, while 10 a.m. was far and away the most popular time for Facebook sharing to occur.

When it comes to email, users say they read email most during the morning, afternoon and evening, and least at night. Abuse is reported most often on Saturdays and Sundays, and most often around 6 a.m. Bounces also happen most often on Saturdays and Sundays, and most often around 4-6 a.m.

On the other hand, opens happen most often on the weekends, and around 6 a.m. Clicks also happen most often on the weekends and around 6 a.m. All of this points to HubSpot’s recommendation to tinker with emailing on the weekends and to send out emails very early in the morning.

CTRs are highest for emails that are sent once a month. While CTRs dip between 6-21 sends per month, they rise between 26-30 sends per month. Unsubscribe rates are also highest for emails that are sent just a few times per month and dip beyond that, which highlights the safeness of sending more emails. Newer subscribers also display the highest CTRs, according to the webinar.

The last section of the webinar covered blogs. HubSpot showed that blogs are read less as the day wears on, and that men read blogs more often at evening and night than women do. Blogs are viewed the most on Monday but see significant dips on the weekends. They’re also viewed the most around 10 a.m., and receive the most comments on the weekends. Comments come most frequently in the mornings, while links peak on Mondays and Thursdays.

The webinar also showed that links and traffic were more easily had for blogs that posted more frequently.
