Google Loses, Bing-Powered Search Gains, Facebook Remains Top Search Term in August

According to the latest figures from Experian Hitwise, Bing-powered search got the better of Google in August. Meanwhile, “facebook” remained the top overall search term for the four weeks ending Sept. 3.

Google claimed 65.09 percent of the U.S. search market in August, down 1 percent from its 66.05 percent share in July.

Bing-powered search claimed 28.99 percent of the market in August, up 3 percent from its 28.05 percent share in July.

The Yahoo portion of Bing-powered search accounted for 15.89 percent of the market in August, up 5 percent from the 15.07 percent share it had in July. Meanwhile, the Bing portion of Bing-powered search accounted for 13.10 percent of the market, up 1 percent from its 12.98 percent share in July.

According to Hitwise, the remaining 64 search engines accounted for 5.92 percent of U.S. searches in August.

Longer search queries, those averaging 5+ words, accounted for 17.40 percent of U.S. clicks in August. One-word queries accounted for 26.26 percent of clicks in August, while two-word queries accounted for 23.72 percent, three-word queries accounted for 19.45 percent and four-word queries accounted for 13.18 percent.

The top overall search term in the U.S. for the four weeks ending Sept. 3 was “facebook” with 3.56 percent of clicks. “Youtube” followed with 1.12 percent, while “facebook login” had 0.79 percent of clicks.

“Craigslist” had 0.58 percent of clicks, while “facebook.com” had 0.46 percent, “yahoo” had 0.37 percent, “ebay” had 0.35 percent, “www.facebook.com” had 0.29 percent, “mapquest” had 0.19 percent and “yahoo.com” had 0.16 percent.

The most-visited U.S. website for the four weeks ending Sept. 3 was Facebook, which boasted 10.21 percent of visits. Google followed with 7.68 percent, followed by YouTube with 3.08 percent.

Yahoo Mail (2.79 percent), Yahoo (2.57 percent), Yahoo Search (1.38 percent), Bing (1.35 percent), Gmail (1.21 percent), MSN (0.94 percent) and Windows Live Mail (0.91 percent) rounded out the top 10.
