Facebook, Twitter and Blogger Are Most Popular Social Media Sites Used by Companies

Posted on

Aggregating data from the likes of Simply Zesty, Pingdom and Google, Search Engine Journal offered a neat visual overview of the social media landscape in an infographic titled “The Growth of Social Media.” Among the many tidbits of information is a listing of the most popular social media sites utilized by companies.

According to the infographic, 86 percent of U.S. Internet users 18-29 years old use social networking sites, while 61 percent of users 30-49 do the same. The percentage dips lower for users 50-64 years old (47 percent) and 65+ years old (26 percent).

Facebook welcomes 310 million daily unique visitors. Orkut follows with 51 million daily unique visitors, while Ozone attracts 37 million unique visitors. StumbleUpon (27.5 million) and Twitter (22 million) followed.

If Facebook were a country, its 640 million registered users would make it the third-largest in the world. Seventy-five percent of brand likes come from advertisements. In terms of usage in 2010, Chicago is the fastest-growing city. The fastest-growing segment of users on Facebook is college-aged kids.

In the average 20-minute period in 2010, there were 5.9 million wall posts, 2.7 million photos uploaded and 10.2 million comments posted on Facebook.

Nearly half, or 49 percent, of Twitter users say they never or rarely check Twitter.

Meanwhile, the infographic indicates that 80 percent of companies use social media for recruitment – 95 percent use LinkedIn.

A separate infographic using comScore data shows that LinkedIn boasted 33.4 million unique visitors in June.

The infographic from Search Engine Journal shows that 53 percent of employers research potential job candidates on social networks. However, more than a third of these employers said a social networking profile proved a job candidate had lied about their qualifications.

In 2011, 39 percent of companies are using blogs for marketing, up from 34 percent in 2010. This figure is expected to rise to 43 percent in 2012.

Seventy-one percent of companies are using Facebook, followed by 59 percent using Twitter, 50 percent using Blogger, 33 percent using YouTube, 33 percent using message boards and 6 percent using MySpace.
