Facebook is the Top Overall Website, While Amazon Leads Retail and Staples Leads Office Supplies

In a glimpse of the search landscape, Experian Hitwise shows that for the week ending Saturday, March 5, Facebook was the top overall website (among other things), Staples.com was the top office supplies website and Amazon.com was the top retail website.

Facebook led all sites with 10.16 percent of all visits for the week ending March 5, according to Hitwise. Google followed with 7.53 percent of visits, while Yahoo Mail got 3.06 percent, YouTube got 3.03 percent and Yahoo got 2.41 percent of all visits.

Google remained the top search engine with 66.69 percent of searches, as of the four weeks ending Feb. 26. Yahoo followed with 14.99 percent, while Bing had 13.49 percent, Ask.com had 2.65 percent and AOL had 1.51 percent.

Google Maps was the top travel website with 14.52 percent of all visits for the week ending March 5. It was followed by MapQuest with 5.89 percent, Expedia with 3.32 percent, Southwest Airlines with 2.52 percent and Priceline.com with 2.21 percent.

In the social networking and forums vertical, Facebook took the cake with 64.53 percent of all visits, followed by YouTube with 19.23 percent. All other sites shared the scraps, with MySpace taking 1.48 percent of visits to this vertical, Yahoo Answers getting 1.16 percent and Twitter taking 1.08 percent.

Bank of America Online Banking was the top website in the banks and financial institutions vertical with 8.35 percent of visits, followed by Chase Online with 7.58 percent, Bank of America with 7.33 percent, Wells Fargo – Online Banking with 5.49 percent and Chase Banking with 4.38 percent.

Meanwhile, Yahoo Real Estate topped the real estate vertical with 9.08 percent of all visits, followed by Realtor.com with 6.32 percent, Zillow with 4.99 percent, Trulia.com with 4.39 percent and Rent.com with 2.47 percent.

Staples.com was the top office supplies website for the week ending March 5, as it grabbed 17.90 percent of visits to the vertical. VistaPrint followed with 17.86 percent, while Office Depot got 10.94 percent.

The top office supplies search term was “staples” with 8.26 percent of search clicks for the four weeks ending Feb. 26, followed by “office depot” with 6.48 percent and “office max” with 3.48 percent.

Google was the biggest source of upstream traffic to office supplies websites for the week ending March 5, as it sent 17.57 percent of clicks that way, followed by Yahoo Mail with 5.44 percent and Yahoo Search with 4.55 percent.

For the retail category, Amazon.com was king with 16.12 percent of visits, followed by Walmart with 5.33 percent and Target with 3.69 percent.

For the four weeks ending Feb. 26, “walmart” was the top retail search term with 2.22 percent of search clicks, followed by “amazon” with 1.86 percent and “best buy” with 1.02 percent.
