Android Ad Impressions Are Surging

According to Millennial Media’s Mobile Mix report for October, mobile ad requests on Android devices grew 65 percent month-over-month, while requests on Apple devices grew 12 percent. Also, among smart phones, Android has pulled even with Apple iOS in terms of market share.

Millennial Media found that Apple remains the top mobile-device manufacturer in October with 24.98 percent of the market, followed by Samsung with 17.06 percent, Motorola with 14.78 percent and RIM with 13.48 percent.

HTC was fifth with 6.78 percent, followed by LG with 5.35 percent, Nokia with 2.07 percent, Sanyo with 1.84 percent, Sony Ericsson with 1.30 percent and Kyocera with 1.14 percent.

Apple has been the top device manufacturer for the past 13 months, according to Millennial Media.

The iPhone was the top mobile device with 15.96 percent of the market in October, followed by the BlackBerry Curve with 7.89 percent, Apple iPod Touch with 7.53 percent, Motorola Droid with 6.73 percent and Samsung Freeform (SCH-8350) with 2.38 percent.

The BlackBerry Bold 2 was sixth with 2.16 percent of the market, followed by Samsung Vibrant Galaxy S with 1.92 percent, HTC MyTouch Magic with 1.69 percent, Apple iPad with 1.49 percent and Motorola Cliq (MB200) with 1.47 percent.

Millennial Media reports that 61 percent of mobile devices were smart phones, 28 percent were feature phones and 11 percent were connected devices (e.g., iPod Touch, Sony PSP, etc.) in October.

Of the smart phones observed on Millennial Media’s network, 37 percent were running iOS, 37 percent were running Android OS and 20 percent were running RIM OS.

The report also found that 19 percent of the mobile devices were on a Wi-Fi connection, 19 percent were on Verizon, 14 percent were on Sprint-Nextel, 13 percent were on T-Mobile, 9 percent were on Metro PCS, 9 percent were on AT&T and 5 percent were on Cricket.

Forty-eight percent of the devices were of the touch screen variety, while 27 percent were touch and QWERTY and 23 percent were QWERTY.

When ranked by impressions on the Millennial Media network, the U.S. ranked as the top country, followed by the U.K., Canada, South Korea, Australia, China, Singapore, France, Indonesia and the Netherlands.

Games ranked as the top global mobile app category (by impressions), followed by social networking, mail and messaging, music, and entertainment.

Android requests grew 65 percent month-over-month, and 2,182 percent since January.

Apple requests grew 12 percent month-over-month, and 32 percent since the beginning of the year. Meanwhile, RIM requests increased 43 percent month-over-month, and 243 percent since January.

The report also notes that iPad requests grew 112 percent month-over-month.

Mobile ad impressions on the Millennial Media network grew 20 percent faster outside the U.S. in October.
