56% of Smartphone Owners Say They Prefer Browsing Internet Over Smartphone Than Over Computer

According to a survey from Prosper Mobile Insights, nearly 53 percent of smartphone owners said they use their smartphones for all the functions and that “it’s my life.” Nearly a third said they use their smartphone’s basic functions and some apps. More than half of respondents also said they prefer browsing the Internet via smartphone than over a computer. The survey of 102 smartphone users was conducted from May 13 to May 18.

When posed the question, “Which of the following best describes how you use your smartphone?” 52.9 percent said, “I use my smartphone for all the functions…it’s my life,” while 30.4 percent said, “I use my smartphone for basic functions and some applications (weather, GPS, social media),” and 16.7 percent said, “I use my smartphone for basic functions (call, text, email).”

Meanwhile, the survey found that 55.9 percent of respondents said they prefer using their smartphones over their computers to access the Internet, compared to 35.3 percent who said the opposite. Another 8.8 percent said they didn’t know which they preferred.

comScore’s quarterly report for March showed that 38.6 percent of mobile subscribers in the U.S. used the browser on their mobile phones, up 2.2 percentage points from 36.4 percent in December.

Jumptap, a mobile advertising platform, found that in April, 58 percent of mobile Internet users were getting content through their browser, versus 42 percent who were getting content via ad-supported apps.

The survey from Prosper Mobile Insights also found that 35.3 percent of respondents said their location being tracked was the privacy/security issue that concerned the most regarding their smartphones, followed by 31.4 percent who said someone accessing their personal information, 21.6 percent who said someone accessing their financial data, and 11.8 percent who said their online behavior being tracked.

Prosper Mobile Insights also found that 81.4 percent of respondents used their smartphone for browsing or looking for a product/service, 77.5 percent for locating a store or finding store hours, 57.8 percent for reading customer reviews, 57.8 percent for researching specific products, 53.9 percent for receiving text messages with special offers, and 50 percent for making a purchase.

Meanwhile, 34.3 percent said they used their smartphone for scanning a QR code, 20.6 percent for writing a customer review and 5.9 percent for none of the above.

Texting was the one smartphone function that 21.6 percent of respondents said they couldn’t live without, followed by 16.7 percent who said the Internet, 15.7 percent who said email and 11.8 percent who said they had no preference.
