Should Reebok be Chastising Trump?

Posted on by Patty Odell

Watching the Trump Twitter feed—and the words that come out of his mouth in general—has become a recreational sport for some, like the media, marketers and other sorts. But watching marketers—and their own tweets—can also be entertaining, and enlightening.

Most good marketers are standing at the ready to take advantage of any current cultural moment they can attach their brand to, whether that involves a sitting president or a blackout during Super Bowl XLVII.

Trump has said many questionable things about women, and his recent comment to France’s first lady Brigitte Macron is no exception. Trump mentioned to Macron that she was “in such good shape—beautiful,” during his recent trip to France. Reebok, the global athletic footwear and apparel company, took advantage of the comment to push out a tweet asking when—if ever—it would be ok to say that to any woman.

The brand asks a number of questions—that it then answers—on this chart, including “Are you a world leader greeting the spouse of a head of state?” The tweet has more than 80,000 likes—and plenty of comments from those who agree and those who disagree. Reebok, as a brand that has long helped people get in shape, has the authority behind its tweet to make the comment, but as with any branded social post it risks alienating Trump supporters and others, as reflected in some of the vitriolic comments on its post. What are you thoughts?
