Xbox Shows Off New Gaming Handheld at First-Ever College Football Sponsorship

Microsoft Xbox is no stranger to outside-of-the-box marketing collabs. Just this year, the company launched Xbox-branded Crocs and limited edition SpongeBob controllers, partnered with LG to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming to automobiles, and even powered an exhibition at the Louvre tying back to its Age of Empires games.

To promote its latest piece of hardware, the ROG Xbox Ally handheld device, Xbox is again thinking outside the box to get the word out this holiday season. But in this case, the Ally campaign involves uncharted territory for the company: a college football bowl game.

In November, Xbox was named the official title sponsor of a new bowl game operated by ESPN Events. The inaugural Xbox Bowl was played on Thursday, Dec. 18, and broadcast live on ESPN2 from the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. It featured a matchup between Missouri State and Arkansas State, facing off for the chance to lift a “playable” trophy adorned with an Xbox Ally at the center.

Xbox Engagement and Social Activation

Xbox integrated the handheld into the game in other ways, including segments showing players from both teams getting the device as a gift for playing in the bowl. Arkansas State won the bowl 34-28 and Xbox went loud to create a viral moment for social media: Halo protagonist Master Chief rode in on a Warthog, one of the games’ most popular vehicles, to hand out the Ally-themed trophy as well as MVP awards designed to look like Xbox achievement banners. Master Chief had also performed the coin toss earlier in the evening.

Those watching the Xbox Bowl on TV or following along on social media were also treated to a new ad spot highlighting Xbox’s major franchises. While on the ground, Xbox hosted a fan fest that included a DJ and photo ops with the brand’s most popular characters, including mascots dressed as characters from Fallout and World of Warcraft.

Crucially, fans also got the chance to play recent titles on the Xbox Ally. For many attendees, it will have been their first time using the device, which launched in October. A central feature of the Ally is its portability as well as the ability to stream titles from the cloud, allowing players to access their games wherever they want. Highlighting this functionality and “play anywhere” philosophy was top of mind at the event, according to Microsoft.

“Xbox is all about empowering people to play however and wherever they like. The Xbox Bowl brings that spirit to life — mixing game‑day energy with the joy of gaming in a way fans haven’t seen before,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Chief Marketer. “Teaming up with ESPN lets us bring players closer to the action, whether they’re in the stands, at home, or jumping into games with friends around the world.”

What’s more, the Xbox Bowl was part of a two-pronged attack from the Ally marketing team that Thursday night. The handheld device also appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as the episode’s stocking stuffer, with every member of the audience getting their own Xbox Ally as a gift.

Gaming Publishers Home in on College Ball

The Xbox Bowl isn’t the first time a major game publisher has sponsored a bowl game. PlayStation was first on that front. The Xbox competitor sponsored the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl (now known as the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl) from 2016 to 2022, while also integrating into game week activities in the Phoenix area each year, including pregame parties, media days and team community service projects. University bands performed PlayStation game music during Fiesta Bowl halftime shows as well.
