Online Shoppers Look to Minimize Purchase Risks: Survey

Online shoppers are more likely to purchase a new or unfamiliar brand if they are offered free return shipping, guaranteed satisfaction and the ability to return products to a nearby store, according to a recent survey conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The report said that by minimizing the risks associated with purchasing an unfamiliar brand a purchase will be more likely.

In addition, the survey found that close to 80% of online shoppers said purchasing decisions are strongly influenced by the ability to buy from trusted retailers and trusted product brand names.

In nearly all retail categories brands were found to be more important in an online shopping environment than at brick and mortar stores.

The good news for online retailers is that 64% of e-shoppers are either very or somewhat willing to purchase a new brand or a brand they have never tried before from an online shopping site.

Other findings include:

* Nearly 75% of online consumers indicate they would be more likely to purchase a new or unfamiliar brand if the site offered a 100% satisfaction guarantee that also includes free return shipping.

* More than 50% of respondents would make the purchase if the site allowed them to return the product at brick and mortar store.

* 36% would purchase is the cost is significantly lower than a familiar brand

* 29% would buy if familiar with e-shopping site

* 22% wanted features that would answer questions

* 21% wanted information about the product available online
