Online Research Influences Billions of Dollars Spent Offline

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

In 2005, consumers will spend more than $632 billion offline as a direct result of research they conducted in cyberspace, a number that dwarfs the $199 billion consumers are expected to spend on the Internet.

The research, conducted by Jupiter Communications Inc., Chicago, also found that more than 68% of online buyers researched products online and then purchased them at a brick and mortar store. Forty-seven percent of respondents reported that they made the purchases by phone.

In addition, both online purchases and Web-influenced off-line purchases are expected to exceed $235 billion this year and reach more than $831 billion in 2005. Online consumers will represent 75% of all expected U.S. retail spending (both online and offline) in 2005, up from 43% in 1999.
