According to Smaato, a mobile ad optimizer and mobile advertising company, we should expect a big year for mobile applications in 2011. Its “Mobile Advertising Trends 2011” slideshow sheds light on many of its big expectations in the coming year.

In 2011, more than 85 percent of mobile phones sold around the world will include browsers, according to Smaato. The company expects smart-phone sales to pass computer sales in 2012, and that mobile phones will overtake PCs as the most common Web access device worldwide by 2013.

There are 136.6 million 3G mobile Internet subscribers, followed by 106.3 million in Japan, 38.8 million in South Korea, 34.3 million in Italy and 29.5 million in the U.K.

In the U.S., mobile advertising revenues are expected to reach $1.24 billion by 2011. Smaato notes that 49 million U.S. consumers are already engaged with mobile advertising, and that 12 million clicked on a mobile ad and purchased an item. U.S. mobile advertising revenues are expected to boom to $5 billion by 2015. Nevertheless, the U.S. ranks as the second largest mobile advertising market.

Asia is the largest mobile advertising market, as $1.5 billion in mobile advertising revenues are expected in 2011. Smaato notes that 16 billion mobile page impressions per day were observed in Asia in 2010, and that the continent boasts 2 billion mobile users and 433 million mobile Internet users. Japan leads the way in terms of mobile ad revenues in Asia, followed by South Korea and China.

Europe is slated to generate $212 million in mobile ad revenues by 2011. This figure is expected to surge to $1.3 billion by 2015.

When it comes to click-through rates for mobile operating systems, Symbian leads the way, followed by the iPhone/iPad/iPod, feature phones, Windows Mobile, Android and BlackBerry devices.

According to comScore, Japan boasts the most connected mobile users, as 75.2 percent used connected media (browsed or accessed applications or downloaded content). The U.S. followed with 43.7 percent, while Europe trailed with 38.5 percent.

In Japan, Mixi is the top mobile social media brand, followed by Gree, Twitter and Mobage Town.
