Internet Display Ad Spending Surges 26% in Q1 2013, but Overall Global Ad Spend Struggles

According to the latest figures from Nielsen’s Global AdView Pulse report, spending on display advertising was strong in the first quarter of 2013. However, the global ad spend picture across industries looks a bit more mixed.

Nielsen reports that display Internet advertising saw global spending grow 26.3 percent in the first quarter, with especially strong growth in Asia-Pacific (33.2 percent) and Latin America (48.2 percent).

Internet display ad spend accounted for 4.4 percent of total media spend in the first quarter. Television continued to lead the way with 59.0 percent of spending, followed by newspapers with 18.3 percent, magazines with 9.4 percent and radio with 5.5 percent.

When it comes to specific sectors, Nielsen reports that the industry and services sector grew the fastest in the first quarter, up 8.0 percent. However, automotive saw spending decline 5.1 percent and financial services saw spending decline 2.9 percent.

According to IAB, first-quarter digital ad revenues in the U.S. hit $9.6 billion, a new high and 15.6 percent higher than the $8.3 billion reported in the first quarter of 2012.
