Pepsi, Motorola, and Yahoo! to Offer Video Ringtones

Posted on

Yahoo! has always had a strong desire to offer its users an increasing amount of unique content, and they seem to have found a niche that has been virtually untapped thus far. The trio of Pepsi, Motorola, and Yahoo! Music will soon offer ringtones that integrate videos. These ringtones will feature artists such as Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, and the All American Rejects.

There will initially be about 150 of these music and voice ringtones, each of which will run for 40 seconds or less. They will be exclusive to the Pepsi Smash site on Yahoo! Music and the Pepsi Ringtone Store on the Yahoo! Tones Web site.

The promotion of these video ringtones will involve a sweepstakes. Codes will be included with about 800 million Pepsi products, one in three of which will unlock any of 150 music files that can be downloaded directly to mobile phones. The sweepstakes will be promoted on Yahoo!’s front page, Yahoo! Music, Yahoo! Games, Yahoo! Mobile, and Yahoo! Mail.

Motorola’s role will involve a Motorola StudioMoto Mobile Tour which will visit beaches, festivals, and other locations to give consumers the opportunity to “Live Their Music.” The tour will span 12 weeks, and will include a bus stocked with Pepsi products.

“Yahoo! Music has had a long-standing relationship with Pepsi that was established with the Smash on Yahoo! Music program launch in June of 2005. When Pepsi partnered with Motorola to deliver original ringtones this summer, Smash on Yahoo! Music was the natural choice for delivering this experience, and gives Pepsi and Motorola maximum reach online,” said Kerry Trainor, director of Yahoo! Music, Radio, Video, and original content.

Trainor also indicated that this venture will open up opportunities to pursue similar projects with other parties.
