Google Extends Lead Amongst Search Engines, Ask.com Also Gains in November

Posted on

Experian Hitwise recently laid out its search engine rankings for November and, to no one’s surprise, Google remains the top dog, with Yahoo! and Bing losing ground, and Ask.com gaining a bit.

Google led the way with 71.57 percent of all U.S. searches in November, a 1 percent month-over-month increase from its 70.60 percent share in October.

Yahoo! was second with 15.39 percent of all searches, down 5 percent from 16.14 percent in October.

Bing finished with 9.34 percent of all queries, down 2 percent from 9.57 percent in the previous month.

Ask.com crept up to 2.65 percent of all searches in November, a 1 percent increase from its 2.62 percent share in October.

According to Net Applications, Google claimed 84.91 percent of the global search engine market, while Yahoo! finished November with 6.22 percent.

Baidu finished third with 3.28 percent of the global market, followed by Bing with 3.26 percent, Ask.com with 0.58 percent and AOL with 0.49 percent.

There wasn’t much change in the percentage of clicks by number of keywords, according to Experian Hitwise. One-word queries (24.13 percent) and two-word queries (23.14 percent) remained virtually unchanged from October. Three-word queries accounted for 20.37 percent of all searches in November, a 1 percent drop from 20.53 percent in October.

Four-word queries (13.84 percent), five-word queries (8.13 percent), six-word queries (4.43 percent) and seven-word queries (2.43 percent) remained virtually unchanged.

Queries that were eight or more words in length accounted for 3.54 percent of all searches during the month, a 1 percent increase from 3.49 percent in October.

The company also notes that Google remains the biggest source of upstream traffic to major verticals, while Bing is slowly gaining ground.

Google accounts for 21.10 percent of upstream traffic from search engines to Automotive sites, 31.62 percent of traffic to Health sites, 19.29 percent of traffic to Shopping sites and 28.87 percent of traffic to Travel sites.

Yahoo! is second in all four categories, while Bing is third, though it has exhibited the biggest year-over-year increases.
