Consumers Save 27% in November/December 2010 Thanks to Digital Coupons

According to the “RetailMeNot.com Holiday Data Report” for November and December 2010, consumers saved about 27 percent online by using digital coupons.

The report shows that U.S. consumers saved $15.1 million in November and $17.1 million in December, for a total of $32.2 million in holiday savings thanks to digital coupons. In November, the average discount was 27 percent, while in December the average discount was 26.8 percent.

In November, RetailMeNot.com received 21.5 million visits, up 27.2 percent from 16.9 million visits in November 2009. In December, the site received 24.4 million visits, up 26.3 percent from 19.3 million visits in the same month in the previous year.

Users shared 40,760 coupons in November, submitted 6.5 million votes and left 17,517 comments. In December, 53,494 coupons were shared by users, 8.7 million votes were submitted and 21,570 comments were left.

Breaking things down by online and printable, RetailMeNot.com showed that 622,073 online coupons for 81,617 retailers were available in November. Meanwhile, 43,308 printable coupons for 52,000 stores were available during the same month.

In December, 620,727 online coupons for 81,997 retailers were available. There were also 39,345 printable coupons for 52,000 stores available during the month.

The site generated $56 million in online coupon sales in November, up 27 percent from $43.8 million in the same month in 2009. The top online coupon for the month was for $5 off a $50 purchase at Target.com, while the top printable coupon was for $5 off any purchase of $20 or more for breakfast at IHOP.

In December, $63 million in online coupon sales were generated by RetailMeNot.com, up 26 percent from $50.2 million in December 2009. The top online coupon was for $20 off an entire purchase online at Bath & Body Works, while the top printable coupon was for an additional 30 percent off already reduced prices at Coach Factory Store.

The top 10 most searched stores in online coupons in November and December were Amazon, Victoria’s Secret, Kohl’s, JCPenney, Macy’s, Bath & Body Works, Target, Best Buy, Old Navy and Toys “R” Us, in that order.

According to RetailMeNot.com, New York was the top state using online coupons in November and December, followed by Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Virginia, Maryland, New Hampshire, Illinois and Pennsylvania.

Coupons.com also released some data recently, revealing that for the second year in a row, Atlanta laid claim to the title of the “Most Frugal U.S. City” in 2010. It was followed by Tampa, Fla.; Cincinnati, Ohio; St. Louis; Minneapolis; Charlotte, N.C.; Nashville, Tenn.; Cleveland; Pittsburgh; and Raleigh, N.C. These cities were ranked by the average amount of online coupon savings printed.

When it came to the top frugal cities ranked by use of mobile coupons, Atlanta still ranked atop the list, followed by Tampa, Fla.; St. Louis; Cincinnati, Ohio; Oklahoma City, Okla.; Dallas; Charlotte, N.C.; Pittsburgh; Tula, Okla.; and Miami.
