New York City is giving residents dozens of fun reasons to spend their vacation at home this summer.
NYC & Co., New York City’s marketing, tourism and partnership organization, has kicked off a six-week campaign to encourage residents to discover the unique features in the city’s five boroughs. Pitching its “Go Local” tagline, the agency will promote local happenings each Thursday for six weeks with street teams.
Reps will visit high traffic locations, including Grand Central Terminal, Union Square and the Port Authority, among other areas, handing out fliers with a list of Top-10 activities for the week and driving recipients to http://www.nycvisit.com/golocal. In addition, people will receive “Go Local”-branded stickers, temporary tattoos and pins to spread the word about the program.
“For the first time, we’re calling on residents to discover their own backyard,” Christopher Heywood, NYC & Co.’s vice president of travel and tourism PR, said. “Many may not know there is a world of experiences out there.”
Most of the featured activities are free or have a low cost to make residents’ “staycations” affordable in the wake of high gas prices and a tight economy, Heywood said.
People will also receive savings passes, part of the Summer in the City program, which offers both residents and visitors discounts on museums, attractions, hotels and restaurants through Sept. 1. The passes offer savings on close to 200 activities and events throughout the five boroughs. Details are available at http://nycvisit.com/summerinthecity/index.cfm.
Local advertising will help support the campaign, which NYC & Co. is handling.
