The Pennsylvania Bureau of Consumer Protection last week announced it will release more than $1.7 million to state residents who made excessive purchases from Publishers Clearing House. More than 8,300 consumers will receive pro-rated refund checks ranging from $60 to $2,200.
The $1.7 million restitution is from a $34 million settlement to a January 2000 lawsuit filed by 25 state attorney generals accusing Publishers Clearing House of violating consumer protection or public protection laws. The suit, settled in June 2001, claimed the sweepstakes used deceptive language such as “Guaranteed Winner” and “Certified Cash Winner,” which made consumers believe they had won.
