After Diageo decided to reposition its consumer strategy and marketing department to focus purely on marketing, Mark Waller, the executive VP of the department, decided to resign to look for a broader U.S.-based role outside the company, PROMO Xtra has learned.
With the change in department structure, a new role of chief marketing officer is being created to head Diageo’s marketing department in North America. An external search for a candidate to replace Waller has begun, the company said.
Waller will resign effective March 31.
“In his 17 years with the company, Mark has achieved much, and his contribution in the last eight years to helping build Diageo North America has been enormous,” said Ivan Menezes, president and CEO of Diageo North America, in a statement. “He will be missed.”
Xtra first reported Waller’s plans to resign yesterday.
Waller and his team were featured in a cover story (PROMO, Sept. 2003) that focused on the relaunch of the Smirnoff brand. Later that year he was named one of PROMO’s Marketers of the Year (PROMO, December 2003).
