FTC Proposes Fees for Do-Not-Call Registry

In a proposed amendment to its Telemarketing Sales Rule, the Federal Trade Commission would add an annual fee of $29 per area code to access its national Do-Not-Call registry. The maximum annual fee would be $7,250.

Among other things, the amendment would also allow access to up to five area codes for free and sets an effective date of Oct. 1, 2003 for the provisions of the amended rule. It would allow more entities to access the registry, which had been limited to telemarketers.

“Limiting access only to telemarketers, as currently defined by the rule, would prevent those entities that are exempt from the FTC’s jurisdiction from obtaining the information necessary to scrub their lists, should they wish to do so for customer service reasons,” the FTC said in a statement.
