Despite Sprint-Nextel Merger, NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Stays

NASCAR’s premier racing series will continue to be known as the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series in 2005 despite yesterday’s merger of telecoms Sprint and Nextel.

Sprint spokesman Bill White told PROMO that Sprint and Nextel will retain its individual brand identities even though the merged parent company will be called Sprint Nextel.

“We are looking at branding strategies down the road,” White said.

“Our commitment remains the same to the sport and to its fans,” NASCAR NEXTEL Cup spokesperson Mike Mooney said. “The programs we started in 2004 will continue and obviously this will be a great opportunity to deliver more technology offerings to our fans.”

NASCAR signed a 10-year sponsorship deal with Nextel in 2003, and Nextel replaced Winston as title sponsor of its top racing series this year.

“All of this will benefit the NASCAR relationship and will provide NASCAR the opportunity to reach new fans nationwide,” NASCAR CEO Brian France said in a statement.

The $35 billion telecom deal is expected to be complete in the second half of 2005
