Amazon.com received orders for more than 56 million items between Nov. 1 and Dec. 23, making it the company’s busiest holiday season. The Seattle-based retailer did not release a dollar value for the items ordered.
Amazon extended its free shipping offer this year: In 2001 orders placed before Dec. 4 received free shipping. In 2002 the deadline was extended until Dec. 12.
The largest sales day was on Dec. 9, when the company took orders for 1.7 million products. The second largest was on Dec. 11 – the day before the free shipping offer expired – when the company received orders for 1.6 million items.
While they were not counted in the holiday season sales, Amazon also reported selling more than 62,000 gift certificates on Dec. 24.
