Abercrombie & Fitch said it would increase the size and distribution of its catalog in the wake of its decision to shutter A & F Quarterly, its controversial magalog.
“While it has enjoyed success with the quarterly over the years, the company believes it is time for new thinking and looks forward to unveiling an innovative and exciting campaign in the spring,” said the company in a statement.
Spokesman Thomas Lennox said the company would increase the circulation of its quarterly catalog Scope in January but declined to reveal specific numbers.
The New London, OH cataloger and retailer declined further comment at deadline.
Since it was introduced in fall 1997, A & F Quarterly has generated a great deal of attention and its share of controversy, including consumer boycotts.
Last winter, an anti-porn group in St. Louis accused the company of displaying “soft porn” it its stores.
Citizens Against Pornography recently complained to the Board of Aldermen in Des Peres, MO, that a catalog on display at a newly opened Abercrombie & Fitch outlet features photographs of “nude and semi-nude” models, said Virgil Rempe, a member of the group. (Direct Newsline, March 24).
