Wayfair launches generative AI-powered inspiration tool for shoppers

Wayfair’s new Pinterest-like tool allows shoppers to browse, save and shop endless home images, plus create their own rooms.

Home furnishings giant Wayfair recently debuted a generative artificial intelligence-powered image inspiration tool called Muse

The Pinterest-like tool allows shoppers to scroll through endless images of home interiors, save images to a collection and shop similar products from those photos on Wayfair.com. In addition, shoppers can upload their own home photos to see their spaces designed in a certain style using this tool.

On the image search page, each image has a save, “more like this” button and “explore” button. When shoppers click “more like this,” Wayfair repopulates the generative AI image feed with similarly designed rooms. When shoppers tap “explore,” Wayfair brings shoppers to a landing page where they can see related products on Wayfair, they can customize the image or they can upload an image of a room to see how that style would look in their home.

Muse created these kitchens from a shopper’s space and an inspiration image.

“The home category is heavily visual and highly personal, and most people want to start their home personalization journey by simply browsing for ideas,” said Shrenik Sadalgi, director of research and development at Wayfair said in a press release statement. “Muse serves that need and is an endless inspiration engine giving customers the ability to spark an idea, bring their unique visions to life and even transform their existing spaces – all enabled by AI. Muse fosters inspiration and helps you create a home that feels uniquely yours.”

Shoppers can also type queries into the search bar to see the images with their preferred specifications such as “a luxurious bathroom with navy walls, gold accents and a white marble clawfoot tub.”

“Muse can explore an infinite possibility of room ideas populated with items to inspire purchases on Wayfair,” CEO Niraj Shah told investors on its four quarter earnings call according to a SeekingAlpha transcript. “Muse elevates our best-in-class search experience by utilizing generative AI to blend inspiration in shopping.”

Muse is the next evolution of Wayfair’s previous inspiration tool Decorify, which it launched about two years ago. In this app, shoppers uploaded a photo of their space, chose a style, such as costal or traditional, and the app created a realistic image of the shopper’s space in that style. Then, consumers could shop for similar products on Wayfair.

In other Wayfair news, the home giant reported its 2024 revenue decreased 1.3% year over year to $11.9 billion.
