Talk about putting the fear of God into someone. And by the U.S. Postal Service, no less.
I recently received a mailing from the nonprofit Food for the Poor Inc. containing a Miraculous Medal depicting the Virgin Mary. The package was nicely done; an outer box contained a smaller box with a letter, business reply envelope and a card explaining the significance of the medallion.
Honestly though, I’m not sure how I’d chart the effectiveness of this mailing in my household. I’m not inclined to wear the medal, but it does have obvious meaning. I clearly can’t throw it out. In fact, preparing for this column, I went into a panic when I thought I might have lost it. And believe me, I never feel I’m risking eternal damnation if I lose other premiums. Somehow, I just don’t think any higher being gets too excited about missing National Wildlife Federation calendars and address labels.
It got my attention, but I just don’t know what to do. I feel a little like Batman with this medallion. Specifically, Adam West as the Caped Crusader in the classic 1966 film, when he runs around desperately trying to get rid of a bomb. Everywhere he tries to toss the explosive he runs into obstacles
