Poll Finds Credit Card Security Fears Inhibit Online Sales

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Consumers would shop more online if more alternatives to paying by credit card were available, such as being billed by telephone or Internet service providers, according to the 2007 Annual Javelin Consumer Payment Poll.

Consumers indicated they would spend $100 to $1,000 more per year online if they could avoid using credit cards online, due to concerns over Internet security and possible data theft, according to the poll.

Thirty-three percent of consumers said they were concerned that credit card data could be intercepted during transactions or could later be accessed by unauthorized parties.

The poll was commissioned by PaymentOne, which provides online payment services for telephone companies and other businesses.
