Sales were up for many firms reporting November results this week. The Spiegel Group was a notable exception, showing declines in overall, catalog and e-commerce sales.
* JoS. A. Bank Clothiers Inc. reported that total sales for the fiscal month ended Nov. 29 increased 19.4% to $29.6 million, compared with $24.8 million in fiscal November 2002. Comparable store sales increased 2.5%, while combined catalog and Internet sales increased 13.5%.
* The Spiegel Group posted sales of $195.4 million for the five weeks ended Nov. 29, a 25% decrease compared to sales of $260.3 million for the same period in 2002. For the 48 weeks ended Nov. 29, total net sales declined 23% to $1.514 billion from the comparable period last year. Catalog and e-commerce sales dropped 35% for the month.
* The Talbots Inc. reported that total sales for the four weeks ended Nov. 29 increased 6% to $126.0 million, compared to $118.7 million for the four weeks ended Nov. 30, 2002.
* Catalog sales increased 18% to $19 million and Internet sales increased 24% to $11.1 million for Sharper Image Corp. last month. For the four weeks ended Nov.30, total Company sales increased 22% to $69.2 million from last year’s $56.8 million on top of last November’s 33% increase in total sales.
* J. C. Penney Company Inc. showed an 11.7% increase in catalog and Internet sales for the four weeks ended Nov. 22, with sales of $296 million versus $265 million posted during the 2002 period. Department store sales decreased .0.8.% for the month.
