MasterCard International is using a McDonald’s drive-through to tout its PayPass payment system. MasterCard broke a TV spot for PayPass last week as part of its Priceless ad campaign.
The 30-second spot shows a McDonald’s drive-through customer fumbling for cash, then a second customer paying quickly with PayPass keychain fob. The punchline? “Always having exact change: priceless.” The spot runs through yearend via McCann Erickson, New York.
The push comes as more merchants agree to accept PayPass for payments. Shoppers use a magnetic-stripe debit card or a key chain fob that they tap on an electronic PayPass reader at checkout.
McDonald’s accepts PayPass at 9,000-plus restaurants across the U.S. (Xtra, Aug. 19, 2004).
Other retailers preparing to accept PayPass include 7-Eleven, CVS, Regal Entertainment Group, Duane Reade and Meijer stores. A number of sports stadiums already accept PayPass payments.
