Job Change for Mercedes Marketing Head Effective April 1

Klaus Maier

Joachim Schmidt, the head of sales and marketing for the Mercedes Car Group, will be assigned to another senior executive position within the company effective April 1.

The decision to move Schmidt, reported yesterday in PROMO Xtra, was made Wednesday at a meeting of the DaimlerChrysler board of directors, DaimlerChrysler spokesperson Toni Melfi said.

Melfi would not comment on the reasons for the move, though published reports speculated it was because of poor 2004 sales performance.

Klaus Maier, the head of Mercedes-Benz’s trucks Europe/Latin America, has been named to replace Schmidt.

In his new position, Maier will be in charge of all Mercedes Car Group operations, including the Montvale, NJ-based Mercedes-Benz USA division. Mercedes-Benz USA reported sales of 13,513 new vehicles in February, up from January sales, but down 16.5% from February 2004.

From January to September 2004, DaimlerChrysler’s ad expenditures grew 40.9% to $1.2 billion, according to Nielsen Media Research.
