ITAA To FTC: Existing Laws May Already Protect Consumers

The Information Technology Association of America told the Federal Trade Commission that the federal government should look at existing laws, treaties, and self-regulatory precedents before creating new legislation to protect online consumer transactions.

ITAA president Harris Miller was responding to an FTC notice requesting public comment, published in the Federal Registry last December. While acknowledging some government regulation may be needed, he suggested that existing laws may provide enough protection. He added that much consumer reluctance may be due less to the issue of secure transactions and more to the fact that e-commerce as a real medium for transactions is relatively new.
