ID Theft, Demand for Laws Growing, Says Survey

One fifth of Americans have been victims of identity theft or fraud and the vast majority of them fear that someone might impersonate them to ruin their credit and put them in debt, according to the Chubb Group of Insurance Cos. Most respondents called for laws that require companies to pay to restore consumer credit ratings. A survey of more than 1,850 Americans in May found that 20% of respondents have been victims of identity fraud or theft. The 95% of respondents concerned that someone might ruin their credit standing has risen almost 20% from 2000.
