FTC DO-NOT-CALL LIST EXPECTED SOON

The Federal Trade Commission is expected to release its final rule on a national do-not-call list for telemarketing by December. FTC’s director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection Howard Beales said the national list would be “an early Christmas present” for consumers. The DC-based commission has been working on plans to create a national list as part of its amendment to the 1997 Telemarketing Sales Rule and collected 42,000 industry and consumers comments earlier this year (July PROMO). A national list would not supercede states’ own lists (about 20 states have a do-not-call list).
