Internet advertising expenditures amounted to $5.48 billion during first-quarter 2009, a 5% dip from first-quarter 2008’s level, according to the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB).
Online ad spending was $5.77 billion during first-quarter 2008, and $6 billion during fourth-quarter 2008. For the year, it amounted to $23.45 billion, the highest of any full year recorded by the Bureau. This despite being in what the IAB termed the “toughest advertising marketplace in decades” in a release.
“Interactive advertising has taken its rightful place as a fixture on marketing plans across sectors, which means we aren’t immune to broader economic trends,” said Randall Rothenberg, president and CEO of the IAB, in a statement.
Rothenberg continued, “Nevertheless, consumers are spending more and more time with interactive media. For this, and other reasons, interactive media continues to gain share of marketing spend. We’re confident that growth will resume as the U.S. economic climate improves. Interactive advertising is the most accountable way to reach consumers—and in this economy, digital media will be a core component of any successful marketing campaign.”
The IAB’s analysis includes data on online advertising revenues from Web sites, commercial online services, ad networks, free e-mail providers, and all other companies selling online advertising.
