A deadline for adopting a new European Union law on copyright protection has passed with only Greece and Denmark signing up, according to wire service reports.
Copyright holder group officials now fear it may take several months before any EU-wide digital copyright law takes effect.
Internet service providers and others have lobbied heavily against laws they feel could ultimately hurt consumer rights.
The deadline for implementing the European Union’s Copyright Directive, a broad set of new laws to better protect the distribution of film, music and software across the Internet onto digital devices, was Sunday night.
The EU passed the directive in April, ostensibly giving copyright holders more a more modern way to make sure they would be compensated for the digital distribution of their works.
