Colgate-Palmolive Report 2Q Sales Up 4.5%

The Colgate-Palmolive Co. last week reported second-quarter sales of $2.6 billion, up from $2.5 billion one year ago.

Net income increased 4% to $373.9 million from $359.8 million. Global unit volume grew 5%.

North American sales slipped 2.5% and unit volume was up slightly. Toothpaste unit volume in the U.S. was up 9%. New ads with strengthened claims in several categories began during the quarter, the company said.

European sales and unit volume grew 11.5% and 7.5%, respectively. New products driving growth include Colgate Total Advanced Fresh, Colgate Total Plus Whitening, Colgate Sensitive and Colgate Oxygen toothpastes.

Latin America delivered a 5% increase in volume and a 1.5% jump in sales. Asia and Africa reported sales and unit volume of 13% and 11%, respectively.

During the quarter, which ended June 30, the company completed the acquisition of GABA Holding, AG, a European oral care company. The company also sold its detergent business in Ecuador and Peru to Procter & Gamble. The $15 million gain on the sale was offset by the impact of restructuring and changes in distribution networks.
