Spiegel Inc., Downers Grove, IL, had third-quarter net income of the company reported net income of $4.2 million compared with a net loss of $4.2 million in last year’s third quarter. During the same period, the company had revenue of $706.6 million, a 15% increase over third-quarter 1998’s $644 million.
The quarter ended Oct. 2.
According to the company, the revenue growth was spurred by a 17% increase in catalog sales, nearly a five-fold increase in e-commerce sales and a 9% increase in retail sales. According to a statement accompanying the company’s financial results, catalog sales rose in each division primarily due to higher productivity on pages circulated. Eddie Bauer and Spiegel Catalog posted significant e-commerce sales increases while Newport News recorded its first full quarter of e-commerce sales.
